A word from Fernhill veterinary surgeon, Jo Woodman...

Picture
I have known and worked with Jane Edwards for more than 20 years. This has involved routine veterinary work for Jane and the horses at Fernhill and working with Jane as an endurance competitor at all levels of endurance rides including National and International competitions. Jane has also taught at endurance clinics I have been involved with for prospective team riders/horses.

In addition I will often refer both horses and riders to Jane for help with a variety of equestrian related issues in all disciplines. Invariably, although both horse and/or rider will have to work very hard to satisfy Jane’s high standards we see a marked improvement. Jane will always feedback to me anything she feels I should be aware of from a veterinary point of view so that we are all able to work together for the good of the horse.

From a personal view my own horse went to Jane 9 years ago to be broken in – he was not always the most straightforward to work with being a sharp Welsh section D – but he has gone on to perform successfully in dressage, show jumping and cross country. Without a good start to his ridden career this may well not have been the case and I would happily send another horse of my own to Fernhill for breaking or further schooling/remedial work if necessary.

From Lizzie Hadland, Fernhill equine physiotherapist...

Dedicated and utterly professional, Jane possesses that rare ability to interpret and instantly respond to the ever- changing needs of the horses in her care.

Demanding perfection without pressure – both mental and physical – she produces a fluid, free-moving horse that can only be derived from a harmonious relationship between horse and rider.

Jane has a great understanding and depth of knowledge of the classical principles of dressage and puts these to very good use in her training of horses and riders.

She is a very professional rider with high standards and always has the horses best interests at heart.

Sheila, rider at Fernhill...

For me having weekly lessons at Fernhill with Jane is transforming bad habits acquired through many years of riding experience. In just four months of having lessons from Jane, I have been taught with seemingly endless patient expertise on responsive, well schooled and disciplined dressage horses.

My friend, now 66, is a nervous less experienced rider, but lessons with Jane have totally transformed her riding. This is due to Jane's empathy and understanding of the problem which although common in many riders is difficult to resolve. As a very determined and somewhat tense person, I was finding initially that changing not only my way of thinking as well as my position very difficult. A change from long established ways is never the easiest thing to do - my goal is become a better rider with Jane's help. Perhaps to prove that a the age of 74 - one is never to old to learn !! Thanks to Jane this will be possible for both of us.

Amazing friendly yard! Luffs2012

Since day 1 of my riding career I have ridden with Jane. She has quality school horses ranging from beginner to advanced level. The yard has a very friendly and warm atmosphere as there is a lot of interaction between staff and clients. Jane's instruction is second to none, as she makes you aware of how your body affects the horse and helps you create a partnership with it. You learn to ride with feel and precision rather than the typical 'kick and pull'.

Plus the lessons are one to one which means you really get a lot out of them. Furthermore, I have had my horse on livery there and could not ask for better care. I have also learned a lot about horse anatomy and how to train a horse correctly for dressage purposes. Can't imagine ever going anywhere else.

Top Class LAS90

Jane could not be a better instructor. She's capable of coaching any level of rider, from complete beginner, to experienced rider. She's flexible in her teaching methods, to suit each rider and horse, and has many approaches. You will learn every aspect of riding, starting with correct posture, aiding systems (how your legs, seat, and reigns should work together), to creating a happy, well rounded horse. Jane has such a keen eye, and is able to spot the slightest movements from horse and rider, and is quick to correct. Not only do you learn so much about riding, but also about horse anatomy, and human anatomy-and you will learn to use muscles you weren't aware you possessed!

Fernhill Riding hogstrough

Like many, I have ridden since I was a very young, but it wasn't until I went to Fernhill that I really learnt how to ride. One to one tuition really works for me. Having to work with the horse, forming a partnership, as opposed to just following the one in front round and round the school. By riding great quality horses, Fernhill have taught me a variety of dressage movements the right way. A nice little yard, friendly, clean and safe.
